I hope you rested your voting finger yesterday, because after taking Sunday off, the 2011 KidVid Tournament resumes today with the epic battle of the Leadbelly Regional division, hosted by our friends at Gooney Bird Kids. If you thought making your picks was hard before, just wait until you get a load of today’s tournament hopefuls!
#1 Seed: Caspar Babypants, “.
99″
The more I listen to Caspar Babypants, the more I love his music — whether he’s offering bouncily quirky takes on folk standards or deceptively simple originals, he’s one of the more original (and addictive) voices on the kindie scene. One of his biggest strengths is story songs, as evidenced by this tale of a ragged old teddy bear. Do you have some thread?
#4 Seed: The Verve Pipe, “When One Became Two”
I still haven’t quite forgiven the Verve Pipe for “The Freshmen,” but if some of those royalties helped fund this beautiful video, I guess we can finally let bygones be bygones. And I think I need to go buy A Family Album. Isn’t this wonderful?
#2 Seed: Key Wilde and Mr. Clarke, “Big Pet Pig”
Key Wilde and Mr. Clarke are responsible for what might be my three-year-old son’s favorite album of all time, the aptly titled Rise and Shine, and if you aren’t familiar with their cockeyed brand of family-friendly rock ‘n’ roll, then you’re in for a treat. This isn’t quite the rave-up that, say, their take on “Rattling Can” is, but it’s still a lot of fun, and if this clip doesn’t make you laugh out loud at least once, then you’re doing everything wrong.
#3 Seed: Holly Throsby, “Fish and Mice”
Now here’s a video that any one of us could have made by accidentally leaving an iPhone on a table, but could we have written a line as beautifully open-hearted as “Some colors go together / And the circle has no end / And the stars will shine forever / And you are my best friend”? No, I didn’t think so. This is the first time I’ve heard Holly Throsby, and I’m an instant fan — “Fish and Mice” is just lovely.
Those are our contestants for today, folks. Now go vote and I’ll meet you back here tomorrow!
