It must be ‘Anti-Rockabye Baby’ week here at Dadnabbit. I suggested not listening to their CDs in this lullaby album review and Jeff took them to task in another post. So we follow that up with a review of another lullaby cd not named Rockabye Baby.

Áine Minogue is a Irish harpist and singer who just released a new album Close Your Eyes, Love – Lullabies Of The Celtic Lands. While some might believe that all harp music is lullaby music, this is her first album made specifically with children in mind. Since I’m a sucker for all things Irish, and tomorrow is St.

Patrick’s Day, this was an easy album to review.

The album consists of mainly traditional Irish Lullabies with a couple original lullabies written by Áine included.

The album also features numerous guests, including Seamus Egan, who is featured on the Instrumental Dreamland album.

Although the album is 47 minutes long, you might struggle reaching the end of the CD. Not because it’s not good, but you’ll be asleep before the album is over. But, that’s the point of a successful lullaby CD, right?

If you’re a fan of Irish music and have a little one in the house, Close Your Eyes, Love – Lullabies Of The Celtic Lands will be a fine addition to your collection.

Rockabye Baby Plans Smiths Tribute, Proves Parents Still Love Being Pandered To

Hey, what’s even more jiveass than an album of Smiths songs done lullaby style? If you answered “the same damn thing on vinyl,” then you get today’s gold star of sadness, because that’s what the folks at Rockabye Baby! have planned for their next release, due next month.

“With the UK indie rock pioneers’ biggest hits translated into the relaxing sounds of xylophone and bells, you’ll never mope over another sleepless night,” promises the label in a press release that I imagine was written between bouts of incredulous high-fiving by company staffers who, like me, can’t believe there’s a market for more than 30 of these things. “Parents can enjoy instrumental versions of the sweeping, majestic ‘How Soon Is Now?’ or the ironically bouncy ‘Girlfriend in a Coma’ while these very tunes gently rock your kids to sleep. Rockabye Baby is practical and fun!”

I’d substitute “cynical” and “pandering” for “practical” and “fun,” but what do I know? I’m not the one who thought to build a media empire based around banging out my generation’s greatest hits on a frigging xylophone.

Anyway, if you for some reason think your children are too dumb to handle hearing actual Smiths songs or are overflowing with disposable income and/or a love of irony, Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of the Smiths will be available on vinyl in time for Record Store Day on April 21. Want mp3s or a hard copy? Wait until April 24. And then go get a vasectomy.

Alternately, if you’re looking for great lullaby records, I’ll give you the names of a few right off the top of my head. These are all at least one thousand percent better than anything Rockabye Baby! will ever release, and were recorded by artists far more deserving of your dough. They’re kid-tested, Dadnabbit approved:

KidVid 2012: Kids Music Video Tournament (Round Something/Day Whatever)

After all the roughhousing, horseplay, and shenanigans we went through during our first round of voting in KidVid 2012, where else can this tournament possibly go? I mean…who can forget the way Steve Weeks’ mom called the cops on Todd McHatton for toiletpapering the Weeks’ house? Or the way Steve retaliated by covering Todd’s dad’s car with shaving cream and baloney? Clearly, the quest for Number One is making our favorite kindie performers crazy. But we press on, because we are journalists, and living dangerously is what we do. (Except when 3rd & Bird is on. Or Octonauts. Other than that, totally dangerous around here.)

Where were we? Oh yeah, another round of voting! Once more, it’s time for you to do your patriotic duty and send one video on to the next bracket while casting another into the cold, inky blackness of defeat. CHOOSE WISELY.

The polls stay open until 10 PM tonight, at which point we will deliver the results to Zooglobble in a bag that we set on fire before ringing the doorbell.
