CD Review: Grow, by Andrew Queen

I’m not a huge fan of concept albums because they take themselves way, way too seriously, and because it’s usually the result of pretention and unchecked hubris from a musician who thinks because he can write an expressionistic song he can somehow tell a long narrative through an innately non-narrative form. But maybe concept albums are absolutely perfect for kids.

(Or song cycles rather.) As they are supposed to introduce kids to music and teach them something about the world around them, an album of songs on the same subject really hammers a point home, and demonstrates connections between different things that the little one may not have noticed as of yet.

I think of this as I listen to Grow by Canadian singer-songwriter Andrew Queen. It’s a playful, refreshingly non-cloying kiddie record all about food: veggies, spaghetti, strange brews, and cheesy mac. Yes, kids albums often have songs about food because that’s something kids can relate to, but Queen and Karen Stille go to different places with it, and don’t talk down to kids, always a danger in this genre. The songs are an even mix of originals and inventive adaptations of folk songs; “The Pizza Tree” replaces the spaghetti in the “On Top of Old Smokey” kiddie parody “On Top of Spaghetti” with pizza, for example.

The music itself is jaunty and pleasant, rocking a bluegrassy, Union Station-meets-NPR kind of vibe. The musicianship across the board is excellent and confident with standout performances from mandolinist Nicolas Tjelias and Luke Mercier on the banjo, and Queen on the jug, gut bucket, and jaw harp.

This is one you won’t mind having on in the car and is a great way to introduce kids to something other than straight-up rock or pop.

DVD review & giveaway: Elmo’s World: Elmo’s Favorite Things

la la la la, la la la la, Elmo's World

la la la la, la la la la, Elmo's World

Last week Elmo celebrated his birthday  and this week he is releasing a brand new DVD, Elmo’s World: Elmo’s Favorite Things. (out today, February 7th) The latest disc from the Sesame Workshop contains eight (8) episodes of Elmo’s World and features the DVD premiere of Elmo’s World Building Things.

As you would expect, the regular cast of characters are all here: Elmo, Mr. Noodle, his brother Mr. Noodle and their sister Miss Noodle. And of course, Dorothy his pet fish is also here. It’s a collection of episodes that normally air towards the end of every Sesame Street episode. At this stage in the game you know exactly what you’re going to get from an Elmo DVD. Whether it’s Elmo talking to children, Dorothy, Mr. Noodle or other Sesame Street monsters; your child will be entertained, educated and engaged, just like mine, from start to finish.

What exactly are some of Elmo’s favorite things? School, Birthdays, Pets, Games, Dinosaurs, the Beach, Building Things and Friends. Each episode provides a fantastic educational opportunity between parent and child. As my daughter is almost three, this DVD is right in her wheelhouse. She was mesmerized from beginning to end and was more than willing to give me a play-by-play of everything that was happening.

It should come as no surprise that Elmo’s World: Elmo’s Favorite Things would be another solid edition to your child’s DVD collection.

Bonus: We have a copy of the DVD to giveaway! How win it: Leave a comment on this post, share this post on Facebook or RT the @Dadnabbit Twitter account. We will pick a winner this Friday. Good luck!

Details: Approximately 135 minutes. It also includes a downloadable activity book which my daughter loved almost as much as the DVD.

DVD Review: Prep & Landing

This holiday season lacks original Christmas programming. It’s either a repeat from 1977 or a holiday spinoff of a popular movie from 10 years ago.

Thankfully Prep & Landing is neither one of those.

Though it originally aired in 2009, it’s the exception to the rule. Entertaining for both kids and parents, I liked it when it first aired and my daughter has loved watching it ever since the DVD arrived. It’s a cute and clever addition to television’s holiday arsenal.

The story revolves around Wayne (Dave Foley from Kids in the Hall, Newsradio) and his colleague Lanny (Derek Richardson) as they prepare houses for Santa’s arrival. Unfortunately things turn bleak and the duo face Christmas being canceled. Thankfully through some good old-fashioned teamwork, Wayne and company are able to save Christmas.

In addition to my daughter loving it, Prep & Landing also won an Emmy® Award in 2010 for Outstanding Animated Program, an Annie Award in 2010 for Best Animated Television Production plus a Visual Effects Society Award in 2010 for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Broadcast Miniseries, Movie or a Special.

As good timing would have it, a brand new Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice, will air on ABC tonight, Dec. 5 at 8:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. central).

Bonus material on this DVD includes a short with Betty White as the voice of Mrs Claus. There are also bonus “training videos” the elves have to watch. Every single parent who has ever had to sit through one of those videos will greatly enjoy them.
